the gray mandirected by the Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame), is one of the most anticipated action movies of 2022. Just by looking at the action sequences in the film, you can tell that it is one of the most expensive Netflix original movies ever made, with a Rotten Tomatoes audience rating of a whopping 90%. Based on Mark Greaney’s novel from 2009 of the same name, the film starred Ryan Gosling as Sierra Six, a disposable CIA secret agent, and fan-favorite Chris Evans as Lloyd Hansen in an antagonistic role.
Despite audiences being disappointed by the lack of story development, the Russo Brothers have stated that they intend to recreate the universe of the gray man in multiple movies and even a spin-off. The first film did leave some loose ends that needed to be addressed. While we’re at it, here’s what we hope to see in The Gray Man 2.
Avik San: The Return of the Lonely Wolf
Despite having limited movie time, Avi San, a deadly hit man played by Tamil film star Dhanush, won the admiration of the public. He is as proficient as Sierra Six and has a lot of potential to play a pivotal role in the upcoming movie(s). After learning that Llyod Hansen is determined to kill a young girl, we see him abandon the mission by handing over the Asset obtained by Six to Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas). It elevates him to a respectable position and his impact throughout the film is huge, leaving plenty of room to flesh out his character in future films.
In an interview with InsiderRusso Brothers confirmed his character’s return in the upcoming sequel. They stated:
“We’re lucky enough to use Dhanush. We weren’t interested in him playing a one-time character who only appears to be overwhelmed by the lead role in the movie. He’s just as skilled and determined as Gosling in the movie He has a story that allows him to come back into the story at some point — as his own hero.”
Sierra Six in a new mission
although the gray man is based on Mark Greaney’s first novel, the source material has been significantly modified. However, the story remains the same and will in future sequels. So Netflix will adapt the second novel, On targetfor the sequel, and here’s the synopsis for the second movie:
Court Gentry, (Gosling) aka the Gray Man, is back—and once again on the run from old friends and foes. Four years ago, Gentry was betrayed by his handlers at the CIA. Now, an old comrade, a Russian arms dealer Sidorenko returns. back to force him on a mission against his will: to assassinate Sudanese President Abboud, the alleged trigger for the genocide in Darfur.But the CIA has plans of its own for Abboud.With his ruthless employers on the one hand, his blackmailing of former friends on the other, and a doomed mission ahead, Gentry would kill just to get out of here alive.”
We could guess from the synopsis that Ryan Gosling would play a pivotal role in the next movie. On the other hand, he’s adamant about protecting Claire, even if it means taking on the entire CIA. Ana de Armas, who would reprise her role as Dani Miranda, could help him overcome the obstacles and reveal the truth to the public again. However, there is one more important detail that the first movie didn’t reveal, although it did provide a few hints during the conversations in the film.
The Revelation of the “Old Man”
While the gray man ended on a happy note, reunion Claire and Sierra Six, there were a few loose ends that could be explored in future movies. The identity of Old Man, which Carmichael and Suzanne kept mentioning during their secret conversations, is the most prominent of them.
According to the books, Old Man pulls the strings from behind the scenes and uses Carmichael to commit crimes to achieve his personal goals. We can see how dangerous he is from Carmichael’s words in the movie: “You know, the last person to piss off the old man ended up floating in the Potomac.” It piques our interest in Old Man’s true identity, who could be the same character from the first film or a completely new character working for the CIA. Only the future will reveal the riddles surrounding this mysterious character, as the author’s catalog contains more than ten books.
Avik San’s backstory is unknown, and he could also be a pawn of the Old Man, as he refused to work for Llyod Hansen and didn’t kill Dani Miranda when he got the chance. On the other hand, Dani would play a vital role in the next movie, not only providing information to Six, but also revealing the truth she knows. So far, she’s been playing it safe with Suzanne’s story to keep Claire safe, but by the end of… the gray manSix would have saved her and Dani has no reason to hold back any longer.
It has already been confirmed that Avik and Dani will appear in the spin-off series, and they will also return in The Gray Man 2. All of these plot holes are basically hanging threads left by the Russo Brothers, who plan to reveal them in the sequel or subsequent movies. As further mysteries await to be revealed, the story continues to unfold with new episodes, and if you haven’t seen it yet the gray man but it is now available on Netflix.
