shamshera released with great anticipation in theaters on July 22. Unfortunately, the big budget action entertainer, starring Ranbir Kapoor and produced by Yash Raj Films (YRF), failed to attract a large audience on Day 1. In addition, word of mouth was downright negative and thus did not grow over the weekend. The trend was flat and on the weekdays it crashed. Shockingly, it won’t even make it past the collections of YRF’s latest film, Samrat Prithvirajwhich was also a major disaster.
What went wrong with Ranbir Kapoor’s Shamshera? Trading experts share their thoughts
We asked trading experts what went wrong with shamshera According to them. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said: “Apart from a few individual sequences, there is nothing in the film. It was easy writing.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan explains: “The story of a bandit is outdated in the present day. The film was not connected from the trailers themselves. The current generation has become very smart. They could point out that there were no such dresses in the 1870s, especially those worn by Vaani Kapoor. It was also flawed at the script level. Why were the Khamerans kept alive for 25 years? If the authorities hated them that much, they should have slaughtered them. And the character of Shuddh Singh is mind-boggling. 25 saal mein uski tarakki hi nahi hui. Whahahaha fort my hello raha! Moreover, not a single slave died in those 25 years, despite living in inhumane conditions. The makers also showed that the British had sympathy for Indians but not an Indian for their fellow Indians. Not a single action sequence stood out. The film also suffered from bad music.”
Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, commented, “The public couldn’t understand the ins and outs. When you transcend humans into a larger-than-life screenplay, you have to pretend.”
Taran Adarsh also added: “There were high expectations. There’s nothing wrong with that, but the problem is that it didn’t live up to those expectations in terms of content, execution, etc. Nothing works except Ranbir Kapoor. He was fantastic, there’s no denying that. But the best factors can’t really bring life to a dead letter.”
Film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi had a different view, “shamshera Ranbir Kapoor played in an absolutely massive appealing movie. Moreover, it was supported by a banner like Yash Raj and directed by Karan Malhotra who has delivered a solid entertainer in Agneepath (2012). Expectations were clearly in the clouds. Compared to those expectations, the film underperformed. That said, how many movies can we really think of in recent months that even cost Rs. 30 crores weekend? There are equally great movies with big stars, if not bigger ones, that have had as many collections as the weekend earnings of shamshera.”
