Bill Maher thinks he understands why, in fact, Republicans support a candidate like Herschel Walker, asking the question: “How could a person on his resume in a sophisticated country ever get elected to office? may?”
Answer: This is a message to Democrats about how much Republicans don’t like what they’re selling.
On Friday night’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the comedian pooed the notion that standing behind a guy like Walker meant he had lost his sense of integrity. “Really? Now? Honesty died a long time ago after a long battle with tribalism. Honesty survives hypocrisy and fear of the other side,” he said.
Maher joined his audience in the race for the Georgia Senate, in which Republican Walker – a former football player – is competing with Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock. And with that update on the race, comes an update on everything Walker has said, done and revealed about the past month.
“Well, first of all, he’s just an idiot on an almost impossible scale to parody,” Maher began. “Although we once presented his book called ‘Herschl Walker: Science Talker,’ because he says that if humans descended from apes, why are there still apes?’ Then there’s lies and madness and violence.”
That column marked “lie” is over, Mahers explains. “He claimed to be a cop; he wasn’t. Claimed to be an FBI agent; didn’t. Claimed to be his high school valedictorian; didn’t. Claimed to have graduated in the top 1% of his class; Never graduated; once claimed to oversee six hospitals, which is surprising considering the job I got with the FBI.”
And then there is that whole abortion scandal that came out in the first week. Maher explains: “She is 100% against abortion, no exception. But her girlfriend has proof that she paid for it. Then she got her pregnant again and tried to get her an abortion. Their campaign The slogan is ‘Stop before you kill me again.'”
So, Maher asked, why do Republicans stand with him now?
“The simple answer is that they are reprehensible, ignorant and evil. Yes, there is some of it, but I’m sorry if I’m going to live in America and America is going to live in America, I’m going to hurt half the country so much.” Can’t write easily. “Part of the appeal of Herschel Walker or Donald Trump or any number of arrogant Republicans is, in their mind, the worse a candidate is, the more it says to Democrats, ‘Do you see how much we sell what you do? What’s not like that? All that socialism and identity politics and victimization and overpopulation and culture and canceling white self-hatred and forcing complex ideas about race and gender on children too young to understand it. Literally. Anything would be better than this. That’s his point of view.”
“It’s a clear distinction between the parties — Democrats also think the other side is an existential threat, but their response is not to nominate the sick to make a point,” Maher said.
“Anybody can do anything in the name of waking up and the Left will never stop them. And that’s when Republicans say, ‘Okay so it doesn’t matter who we choose to do it,’ he said. “The fact that Republicans have no shame in their game and will vote for any monster with an R in their name is their way of indicating how serious they are about stopping it.”
