The Umbrella Academy is a Netflix original series first released in 2019, which just released its third season in 2022 and later a fourth and supposedly final season. The original media is based on a comic book series written by Gerard Way, who is best known as the lead singer of My Chemical Romance.
The series follows a group of super-powered individuals who were born under strange circumstances and adopted by a mysterious man who raised them to use their powers for good. But the man’s rules and structure caused many of these kids to resent him as they grew up, leaving the family to pursue other passions. Klaus is number four, as each child was given a number before they had a name. His robot mom gave him his name, but his adopted dad prefers to keep calling the kids with their assigned numbers.

Klaus can see the dead, talk to them and bring them out, manifesting them into physical beings to fight for his cause. At the beginning of the series, we see that Klaus is afraid of this gift, afraid of the dead people he might see. Because of this, he constantly drank or used drugs, as it would keep the ghosts at bay. Watching Klaus’ struggles, from devastating substance use to not accepting himself, the viewers immediately sympathize with the character.
Later, Klaus’s adopted father says how disappointed he is in him, feeling that Klaus had the most potential of all his children and did nothing with it. The father being disappointed in this character is a constant on the show for the majority, another aspect many viewers identify with.

Klaus, on the other hand, is a depressed character who deals with natural human issues such as substance use and fear of death. Even this premise allows Klaus as a character to be more grounded in reality in a supernatural show.
