As Scream VIs opening date is imminent, rumors have led to a possible Campbell cameo appearing in the film. Here’s why it would be a bad thing for Neve Campbell to make a surprise appearance at this point.
Neve Campbell would lose his credibility
When No Campbell said she wouldn’t be returning for that Scream VI, fans quickly took to social media platforms to show her support and demand that she be paid what she deserves for her services to the franchise. Campbell further explained her reasoning during a press release, stating that she felt she was not being paid what equated her worth to the scream franchise. After some delegating by studios and Campbell, production for Scream 6 moved on without her. If Campbell were to reappear, her public image would surely take a hit — after all, it’s admirable to see an actor hold her own against a billion-dollar studio.
Would diminish Gale’s moment in the spotlight
Gale Weathers is undeniably just as important to the scream franchise as Sidney Prescott. While Gale started out as Sidney’s foil, she eventually became one of her closest allies and a fan favorite. Gale herself has grown tremendously throughout the franchise, from a selfish reporter with little regard for anyone’s well-being to a woman capable of caring for others. Gale turns in one of the most tear-jerking ones scream history after being made aware of Dewey’s murder, showing the public that Gale is much more than a badass appearance motivated solely by career advancements. With Campbell leaving the franchise, Courtney Cox is the only remaining cast member from the original scream to continue in the franchise, opening up countless possibilities as to what will happen to her character.
Will Gale take over the mantle from Sidney as the franchise’s new titular character, or will she continue to serve as a secondary last girl for characters like Sam Carpenter? Or, in a controversial plot twist, will she follow in the footsteps of her ex-husband’s fate and also fall into the hands of Ghostface? There are countless possibilities circulating among fans like Scream VI fast approaches. If Sidney Prescott showed up unexpectedly in Scream VIit would likely divert attention from Gale’s role in the film, resulting in a disservice to the significant growth Gale has experienced.

The series’ new titular character, Sam Carpenter, is the illegitimate daughter of none other than Ghostface killer, Billy Loomis. Sam’s backstory was only briefly explored scream (2022), in which Sam taps into her repressed psychotic tendencies to defeat Richie and save the day. Nevertheless, Sam is still a relatively new character while Sidney is the face of scream for over 26 years; in order to develop properly, Sam must fulfill her role as scream new last girl without any overshadowing by Sidney Prescott.
A setback for artists who demand a higher salary
What made Campbell’s departure from the scream franchise that is so commendable is its representation for other actors in similar situations; every actor deserves to be paid the way they want, especially women who work in Hollywood. For such a fundamental player of a million dollar franchise to step aside to have her worth respected paved the way for any actor to feel undervalued by major Hollywood studios. Campbell wouldn’t just tarnish her reputation by returning to scream; she would lessen the impact her position has perpetuated on every actor in the industry.
Sidney has served her purpose in Scream
Sidney Prescott is undoubtedly one of the best finals girls in the horror genre, which undergoes a steady character arc all the way through scream twenty-six years running. From being a teenager who maintains a positive attitude in the midst of a killing spree, dealing with the aftermath and unwanted attention each Ghostface encounter brings her, to finally becoming a mother who is always ready to fight for the safety of those around her gone, Sidney is an excellent character with little room for further growth; Sidney has served her purpose in the scream franchise. It’s time for Sidney to finally live in peace and let other capable characters deal with the chaos that a new Ghostface is sure to cause in New York City.
