Why the Emmys Are on a Monday This Year

The 2022 Emmys are upon us, but this year they’re bleeding into the work week.

If you thought you remembered that the Emmys usually take place on Sundays, you’re not wrong. Traditionally, TV’s biggest night is on a Sunday night, just like the Oscars. So why are the Emmys on a Monday this year? You can blame football.

The last time the Emmys were on Monday was 2018 (hosted by “SNL” stars Michael Che and Colin Jost), which marked the last time the ceremony was broadcast on NBC.

With the Emmys hosted by Seth Meyers in 2014, when the awards show aired on NBC, the ceremony was moved to a Monday so that the network could still air NBC’s Sunday Night Football as planned.

NBC took over the rights to Sunday Night Football from ESPN in 2006, but the 2006 and 2010 Emmys events aired on Sundays.

The Emmy Awards air each year on a different broadcast network, which rotates through NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox.

This year’s show, the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, is hosted by Kenan Thompson and is back at Microsoft Theaters for the first time since 2019 after a pair of COVID-safe ceremonies – with the 2020 show at the Staples Center at the last minute was transferred. Speaking with the winners from their homes or other venues, while the 2021 short show was held on the event deck of LA Live.

“Succession” leads this year’s Emmys with a total of 25 nominations, followed by HBO’s “The White Lotus” and Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” with 20 nominations each.

Presenters for the 2022 Emmys include Will Arnett, Ariana DeBos, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, Amy Poehler, Selena Gomez, Jang Ho-yeon, Gene Smart, Diego Luna and Christopher Meloni.
