Every year, Disney, the world’s leading animation studio, releases several entertaining movies with mesmerizing animations and relatively intriguing concepts. Encanto, Vaiana, Raya: The last dragonAnd Confused have all represented the pinnacle of Disney animation and quality. Founded in October 1923, the studio celebrates its 100th anniversary, but before that it presents us with the beautiful film Wishwhich explores the story of the wishing star that so many Disney characters have always longed for.
Wish is an upcoming animated musical film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, and will be the studio’s 62nd animated film. The film, directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn and written by Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore, is about the wishing star, who has long been a part of Disney lore. That said, the movie is one of the most anticipated animated films this year, and while this is largely due to the fact that it’s a Disney movie, there are other reasons to be excited about it.
Tells the story of the legendary wishing star
Star, the wish-granting creature, has been a part of the lore since Disney’s first adaptation Pinocchioincluding the timeless classic “When you wish for a starSince then, the song has become something of an anthem for the studio, and the star has appeared in a handful of films, including Princess and the Frog, Snow White, CinderellaAnd The Muppets.
The star has been talked about in movies for decades and finally in the upcoming film Wish we will see the actual appearance of the star instead of just listening to songs. The story is about how the legendary wishing star grants a wish to a young girl named Asha as she strives to take on the king of Rosas, King Magnifico, along with her goat Valentino. “In Wish, Asha, an astute idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force – a small ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star face a formidable foe – the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico – to save her community and prove that wondrous things can happen when the will of a brave man is combined with the magic of the stars. ‘
Ariana DeBose leads the cast
While exploring the story of the Wishing Star is impressive and exciting enough, here’s another surprise for fans of Disney movies. Ariana DeBose, who recently won an Oscar for Best Performance by a Supporting Actress for her work in West Side Storywill play the main character of the movie Asha.
While this will be Ariana’s first Disney animated film, given her versatility and previous voiceover work, she’s well suited to represent the character of Asha. In addition, the film features two additional notable actors as voice actors: Chris Pine and Alan Tudyk.
While Chris Pine can be seen in the Star Trek movie series and WonderwomanAlan has provided several voices Disney movies, including Encanto, Aladdin, Frozen, ZootopiaAnd Raya and the Last Dragon.
Lots of Singing
Disney movies are never complete without musical interludes, which is what sets them apart. While the characters and story form a solid foundation for the movie, it’s the animations and musicals that really make these movies memorable. The musicals in these films are primarily intended to recreate the classic Disney atmosphere, which is one of the many reasons why Disney is the most popular animated franchise.
Disney continues to push the story forward with musicals, as it has for decades; it’s kind of a tradition. It also targets an audience like children, who need every story in the form of songs to understand it better. Apparently, many movies, especially animated ones, have a hard time conveying the thoughts and emotions of characters to viewers, but these songs would make it much easier to do that.
While all of these factors contribute significantly to the success of these Disney films, adding an emotional impact to the story is also a factor. According to the Walt Disney website, Wish will feature songs written by Grammy nominee Julia Michaels, with music by Dave Metzger (Frozen).
A new mix of watercolor style with CGI animation
Disney is known for improving upon its predecessors and they have created fantastic animated films over time. While they always keep their originality, the studio is also experimenting with new ways to make them stand out, such as for the upcoming film, Wish.
In an article on the upcoming 100th anniversary celebrations, the official Disney website stated, “Inspired by watercolor illustrations of fairy tales that fascinated Walt Disney, the film’s look combines a timeless watercolor style with contemporary 3D CG animation.”
As we all know, modern animation changes faster than we think, and by adapting to different styles, animators can improve movie quality with less effort than usual. Considering that Wish will use a watercolor approach that has brought us classics like Mickey Mousethe combination with the improvised 3D CG will undoubtedly give audiences something unique to look forward to.
Disneys Wish will hit theaters on November 22.
