The Bourne franchise is an action-packed film series that revolves around an amnesiac CIA assassin trying to figure out his identity and discover who he really is. Based on the novels of Robert Ludlum, Bourne franchise contains a total of five movies and a prequel television series called tread that was, per screen frenzy, canceled for a number of reasons. The main character is played by Matt Damon in all movies except Bourne .’s Legacy. The franchise has been subject to both critical and commercial success as The Bourne Ultimatum took home a total of three Academy Awards and both Ultimatum and Supremacy won the Empire Award for Best Picture.
With five films under his belt, it seems like no one can get enough of the action. In the era where movies like John Wick rock the cash register, the Bourne franchise is a classic, but some have wondered if Universal will jump at the chance to pursue a sequel. That said, the Bourne movies were made in a different era of filmmaking, with very different standards of action compared to what we see today. As much as Bourne fans would love to see a sequel, some fans believe the franchise has run its course. The question on everyone’s mind right now is: will a Jason Bourne 6 ever really happen?

Jason Bourne is not getting any younger
While the franchise has become a touchstone in the action genre and laid the foundation for many movies to follow, it’s been a full decade since the release of Bourne’s Identity. While that might not mean much to most, it means a lot in the action world. Jason Bourne, as capable as he is, is not as young as he used to be and may not be as physically capable as he once was. This could mean the end is in sight for the Bourne franchisee. However, Universal could take Bourne out of the main action and make him more of a teacher for a younger generation. Just as Sylvester Stallone withdrew his Rocky character from the rocky franchise in favor of the young Adonis in Beliefs. This makes the rocky franchise is still allowed to continue changing Rocky’s role from a protagonist to a mentor. While Matt Damon isn’t nearly as old as Sylvester Stallone, this change of pace for Jason Bourne could be a potentially good direction for Universal to take the franchise.
Director Paul Greengrass Won’t Be Involved
Paul Greengrass worked with Matt Damon for: The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum and most recently Jason Bourne. The pair have enjoyed the collaboration, with Greengrass admiring Damon’s dedication to the role, while Damon has often sung Greengrass’s praises when it comes to his approach to the role. Given that Greengrass had already stepped back as director for Bourne .’s Legacy, it’s not unlikely Universal will attempt to continue the franchise without him. Speaking of Greengrass, we know he’s now going to direct an adaptation of Stephen King’s epic Fairy tale. The novel’s storyline centers on a fearless teenager with a troubled family life, a magical but dangerous alternate reality, and a battle between good and evil. It will be interesting to see a director specializing in real-life dramatizations take on a fantasy project.
Potential casting disputes
While most people associate the name Jason Bourne and the resulting franchise with Damon, he hasn’t played in every single Bourne movie. Bourne .’s Legacy, starring Jeremy Renner, does not include live footage of Damon as Jason Bourne, as Damon chose to drop out of the project because Greengrass wasn’t in line to direct. This disappointed many fans as Damon who plays the title role is the main draw of the films. How can you get a Bourne movie without Jason Bourne? As result, Bourne .’s Legacy is considered the worst installment in the franchise. While Damon returned in 2016 for: Jason Bourne, this was because Greengrass returned as director. As mentioned above, Greengrass feels like his time working on the franchise has come to an end. With Damon’s history of only wanting to work with Greengrass, it’s entirely possible that Damon refuses to return to the character due to Greengrass’s absence. Ever since Bourne .’s Legacy was such a fantastic flop, it’s fair to believe that if Damon doesn’t want to return to the Bourne character, the franchise may already be over.
Bourne’s Impact on Other Franchises
The Bourne franchise certainly influenced the craft that currently has more universes, namely: Star Wars on Disney+. Tony Gilroy at the helm Bourne .’s Legacyand are widely acclaimed Andoro is currently airing new episodes. The hit series feels like a breath of fresh air in the Star Wars universe and tells a grounded, compelling story that does not require extensive knowledge of the universe. Of Andoro, Gilroy explores the infrastructural dynamics of the empire while asking practical questions about the day-to-day workings of the universe. The titular character, played by Rogue One star Diego Luna, seems to be the galaxy’s very own Jason Bourne, as confirmed by Gilroy. We hope a second season follows!
