Where to watch: in theaters
Akshay Kumar is not having a good time in the cinema. His last two theatrical releases, Bachchhan Paandey and Samrat Prithviraj, were outright flops, the second was even a major disaster, a disaster he had to deal with after a few years. so will Akshay Kumara manage to bounce back with Raksha Bandhan? Well, the box office will decide that, but for now, his movie with Bhumi Pednekardirected by Aanand L RaiAt least on the face of it, has the kind of content that might strike a chord with audiences, especially since the theme of the sibling bond needs to resonate heavily given the time of release.

What is it about
Lala Kedarnath (Akshay Kumar) runs the most famous chaat shop all over Chandni Chowk and has four sisters whose weddings are the biggest concern of his life, especially with the insane amounts of dowry demanded. His second problem is his own life as he cannot marry Sapna (Bhumi Pednekar) before his sisters tie the knot.

what’s hot
Raksha Bandhan emphasizes how the evil of the dowry system is still ubiquitous in India even in metros like Delhi and how even the good people Lala Kedarnath can’t help it but be part of it, thinking it’s the only way to get the to marry daughters of your house. The shock he gets to make him realize how wrong it is is predictable but effective and the beauty is that the heavy drama is offset by abundant humor. After a long time, three songs work in a movie, but not so surprising when Himesh Reshammiya is the man behind all the tunes. Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Neeraj Sood and everyone else playing Akshay Kumar’s siblings are in great shape, as is the lead role itself. The directing and writing work, too, for the most part.
What not
The fat shaming and color shaming get a bit too much after a point, especially if they aren’t resolved properly. For some reason, much of the dialogue is also bellowed at extremely high decibels throughout the cast, especially in the comedic scenes, which weakens some of the humorous impact. The whole movie is also wrapped up too quickly and easily, and a little abruptly, as the story was set up for more. It is fair to say that Hemal Kothari’s editing down to the last detail is a problem, as is KU Mohanan’s pedestrian camera work.
BL verdict
All said and done, Raksha Bandhan is bringing back old-school Hindi cinema with old-school values to good effect. BollywoodLife goes with 3.5 out of 5 stars.
