Donald Trump has made some very strange defenses of his conduct following the leak of a very embarrassing recording related to his federal indictment. And Tuesday night on MSNBC, Chris Hayes mocked that defense.
“Save that for the judge,” Hayes said.
Of course you know the deal by now: In 2021, a reporter and editor working on a book recorded a conversation with Trump in which he admitted to being in possession of several classified documents, and admitted that he had no power to make them public, as he was no longer president. Trump also showed one of these documents to a reporter and editor, neither of whom were authorized to see them, while declaring the whole thing “awesome”. You can read more here.
NBC News has now independently confirmed the authenticity of the recording, which was first made public by CNN, and that Hayes played the recording in its entirety on Tuesday’s “All In”.
“This is classified information, see. “Look at this,” Hayes said, citing the recording after the audio clip was played. [de]He classified all the stolen documents, possibly without telling anyone. Trump says he has the document, you can hear him wringing out the stacks of paper in his beautiful mind as he admits he didn’t make the documents public when he was president.
“You would think this would be a pretty open-and-shut case at this point, but today the convicted former president offered a 12-point rebuttal of the recording,” Hayes said. He then pulled out a clip from a recent interview, which went like this:
“Everything was fine. We did nothing wrong, and everybody knows that,” Trump said.
“Aren’t you concerned that it’s your voice on those recordings?” the interviewer asked.
“My voice was fine. What did I say wrong in those recordings? I haven’t even seen the recording. All I know is that I did nothing wrong. We had a lot of papers accumulated. You can actually hear the tabloids rustle, and no one said I did anything wrong except fake news, which Fox is too,” Trump responded.

“Are there any other recordings we should be concerned about?” the interviewer asked.
“I don’t know of any recordings that we should be concerned about, because I don’t do things wrong, I do things right. Trump said, “I am a legitimate person.”
After the clip ended, Hayes said, “Save that one for the judge, buddy.” Check it out at the top of the page now.
