FX Hillsong documentary to feature former pastors

FX’s new Hillsong documentary will feature the first interviews with former pastors Carl and Laura Lentz since their public expulsion from the church.

“The Secrets of Hillsong,” which is set to debut May 19, will trace the megachurch’s rise to become a congregation filled with musicians, actors and athletes, as well as its subsequent downfall amid explosive scandals and controversies. The four-episode investigative documentary is based on original reporting by Vanity Fair reporters Alex French and Dan Adler.

The documentary, directed by Stacey Lee, will feature interviews with former troupes and other subjects related to the Hillsong story, including Tiff Perez, Ashley Jones and Mary Jones, Josh Canfield, Janice Lagata, Geoff Bullock, David Shoebridge, David Cowdrey and more. Tanya Levin, among others.

“Highlighting the stories that struggle with power and the people who hold it is central to Vanity Fair’s mission,” Agnes Chu, president of Condé Nast Entertainment, said in a statement. “Thanks to stellar reporting by Alex French and Dan Adler, and the courage of those who stepped forward to share their experiences, we know that the power—and its systemic abuse—over people seeking faith and community is Hillsong’s downfall. I am grateful to our partners at Scout Productions and FX for helping us bring this eye-opening story to light.

Presented by Scout Productions and Vanity Fair Studios, “The Secrets of Hillsong” is executive produced by David Collins, Joel Chiody, Michael Williams, Rob Erich, Agnes Chu, Dan Adler, Sarah Amos and Alex French.

“With the depth and clarity of this project coupled with Vanity Fair’s excellent reporting, and the perspectives of first-time speakers, we are committed to telling a complete and definitive story of Hillsong,” said Joel Chiody, Scout Productions executive producer and head of documentaries he said. “Because of these voices, along with the unprecedented access of Carl and Laura Lentz, ‘The Secrets of Hillsong’ provides new insight into how decades of scandal and corruption went unchecked within the church, and more importantly, within the community.” What does it mean for them. In their wreckage.

“The Secrets of Hillsong” premieres Friday, May 19 at 10 p.m. ET/PT with the first two episodes of the series before the final two episodes air on May 26. All episodes will air the following day on Hulu.
