O Yeong-su, 78, who played Oh Il-nam on Netflix’s hit show, has been charged with sexual misconduct over an appeal from his accuser.
Actor O Yeong-su earned himself a Golden Globe Award as Best Supporting Actor for his role in Squid game, but now he’s getting unwanted attention after being charged with sexual misconduct. The news was first reported by local Korean media and confirmed by AFP, accusing the actor of touching a woman’s body five years ago. The actor has denied the allegations.
It appears the allegation is not new, as the case was originally closed by authorities early this year. However, the prosecution has appealed the decision, which has led to the actor being detained again for questioning. A report from JTBC said the actor confessed to “holding hands” with the woman, and while he had apologised, said he did not admit guilt to the charges leveled against him. He was quoted as saying:
“I just held her hand to show the way around the lake. I apologized because [the person] said she wouldn’t make a fuss about it, but that doesn’t mean I admit the allegations.”

O has been in the business for over 50 years, reaching a global audience Squid game became one of the biggest shows ever on Netflix. After the initial reports, AFP noted that a Suwon court official had commented that “everything reported by local media is not factually correct”.

Squid game became an unprecedented phenomenon when it appeared on Netflix in 2021. The first season of Squid game revolves around a match in which 456 players, drawn from different walks of life but each deeply in debt, play a series of child games with deadly consequences in the hopes of winning a prize of 45.6 billion Won. O Yeong-su plays the lead role in the first season of Squid game as Oh Il-nam, an elderly man with a brain tumor who seems to enjoy playing the violent versions of children’s games that make up the competition.
However, it is revealed that Oh Il-nam is not just another contestant, but the creator of the Squid game contest. O previously discussed how he thinks the character’s presence will continue into Season 2. He said:
“I believe that Oh Il-nam will now be deep in Seong Gi-hun’s consciousness. And I think Gi-hun has had some personal growth because of Il-nam. I think that will affect how he life sees and how he makes relationships with other people in season 2. I think season one of Squid game was mostly about incidents that happened to Gi-Hun; the external factors that played a role in his life. But season 2 is more about how he sees himself and how he shapes his own life.”
although Squid game brought O to a much wider audience, his subsequent roles are still in Korean productions and some of his co-stars have since claimed roles in some Hollywood productions.
