Seven turned out to be lucky for stage, screen and television veteran Nathan Lane, who ultimately won an Emmy at the Creative Arts Emmys on September 4 for his role as a food mogul embroiled in a murder mystery with his deaf son (James Caverly) on the Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building.”
The three-time Tony-winning actor, best known for his memorable roles in films like “The Birdcage” and “Mouse Hunt,” as well as series like “American Crime Story” and “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” became the actor most nominated guest in history this year. His nomination for guest actor in a comedy series for “Only Murders” came after six previous nominations for scene-stealing roles in “The Good Wife,” “Modern Family,” “Frasier” and “Mad About You.”
Nathan Lane spoke to TheWrap this summer about working on the Steve Martin-Martin Short-Selena Gomez comedy and expressed his gratitude for being recognized by the show: “It’s a pleasure to be a part of it. And this episode was really ambitious of him and it turned out beautiful. It’s weird because you’re showing up on a set where there’s all these established relationships and rhythms and you just want to come in and do your job right and not rock the boat.”
And fans of Lane and the show can rejoice: his character Teddy Dimas was also featured prominently in the show’s just-ended second season, meaning Lane could possibly win at an eighth try, too.
