The Star Wars franchise has seen many celebrity cameos come and go, but fans were immediately offended by the appearance of Lizzo And jacket black in episode 6 of The Mandalorian, proclaiming their scenes as the death of the franchise. While this may sound a bit overdramatic, the view was shared by many online users, who called out the show for depriving them of the opportunity to be immersed in the Star Wars Universe when famous celebrities were put center stage on the screen.
Black and Lizzo entered The Mandalorian as Captain Bombardier and The Duchess, respectively, rulers of the Outer Rim planet Plazir-15 who enlist Din Djarin and Bo-Katan to uncover the source of a rogue droid problem. However, it seems some disliked this kind of cameo, with one Twitter user saying that Disney created the Star Wars franchise “for the popular kids who giggled and high-fived the bullies for putting you in your locker stopped.” They also called out the franchise for no longer being “to us nerds.”
While the cameos were divisive, the many similar reactions showed that many of those fans who saw the Star Wars franchise was made for them and only they are unimpressed with such high profile celebrities appearing on the show no matter how they fit into the story. Below you can see some reactions.
One Star Wars icon believes Star Wars needs its big name cameos to build its audience
It seems that there is one person who is not against this kind of cameo appearance at all Star Wars legend Billy Dee Williams. As one of the stars of the original trilogy, Williams certainly deserves his take on the modern era of the franchise, and as he noted TMZ, cameos from stars like Lizzo and Jack Black are getting new fans interested in the saga. He said:
“It’s a good idea, no doubt about it. I mean, the whole idea is to try to bring it to the younger people of today, and you have to use the people who are popular today. I mean, it’s a business, you can’t forget that part of it. You’re always trying to build an audience so building an audience means you have to incorporate or bring in the sensibilities of a younger group of people so you have to use the great talented people who are very popular these days to attract a new audience .
A curious thing to note is that there were not many social media users who had a problem with it Back to the future star Christopher Lloyd also appears in the episode and in fact appears in a scene with Lizzo and Black. However, Star Wars has never been far from including some big names, though many are often used as droid voices or behind Storm Trooper helmets. Maybe this episode just had its celebs a little too in your face for some fans.
