Lots of expectations drove on Aamir Khan starrer Laal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumat starrer Raksha Bandhan. Unfortunately, both films opened below expectations and collections failed to improve over the weekend due to mixed word of mouth. We asked trading experts to tell us what they thought didn’t work for these movies.
What went wrong with Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan? Trading experts share their thoughts
Trade analyst Atul Mohan explained: “4-5 years ago, before the pandemic, people didn’t have this kind of access to movies. Now, if the public finds out that… Laal Singh Chaadha is a remake of Forrest Gump, they can easily download it on their phone, sometimes even for free. That awareness has now increased.”
He continued: “In addition, it was an American character and the original film was released 30 years ago. Laal Singh Chaddha meanwhile is longer than Forrest Gump and quite a slow movie. Slow image toh do ghanta bhi mushkil hota hai dekhna. 2.45 am ki slow movie kaise dekhegi public? That’s why it was the wrong choice to make the film in the first place.”
Regarding Raksha Bandhanhe opined: “I think if there is a collision, the company will definitely be divided. If Raksha Bandhan was a solo release it would have collected Rs. 4-5 crores more on day 1. Also a day 1 of Rs. 8 crores is not a disastrous start. It’s quite an achievement for a movie that came out in a crash and came on part of the holiday. The big advantage is that the ladies love it. So there’s a chance it could increase in the long run.”
Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise in Jaipur, said: “The reports about both films are negative. ek movie paune teen ghante ki hai toh dusri paune do ghante ki. Of Laal Singh Chaddha, if it was 2.15 am it would have been better. As regards Raksha Bandhanthe film looks long despite being less than 2 hours.”
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said nothing when he thundered: “Kartik Aaryan is a relatively new face. He hasn’t been around as long as the Khans and others. Still his movie Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 still holds the record of having the biggest Day 1 of 2022. It collected Rs. 14.11 crores on a non-holiday. And Aamir Khan on vacation couldn’t go further than that, that too with an event film! Even Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh failed to collect that much. It is alarming.”
He also said: “Aamir Khan ne ek se ek behtareen movies bye bye. People wait for his movies because it is synonymous with quality. Even a movie like Criminals of Hindustan opened at Rs. 52.25 crores on Day 1 due to his stardom. He opened the Rs. 100, Rs. 200 and Rs. 300 crore clubs. And now his movie will premiere for Rs. 12 million dollars on vacation! Somewhere he needs to reconsider and introspect.”
Film business producer and analyst Girish Johar stated, “On non-vacation I could have understood if these films had taken off like this. But it is not acceptable that these films are opened this way during a holiday. Also, on non-holidays, movies like Thor and Doctor Strange got off to a flying start. Choosing to avoid these realities is the wrong option.”
Raj Bansal stated: “If the audience doesn’t come to watch on the first day there is still hope that they will hit the cinemas on day 2 and on day 3 it will be a big hit, provided the word of mouth is positive. In the case of these two films, the reports started coming in that both films are unbearable, so on day 2 there was a 20 to 25% drop in collections and visitor numbers in my theater compared to the first day.”
He went on to say: “The OTT has also damaged things. If the film is not up to par, the public would rather wait 4 weeks rather than spend a bomb on movie tickets. Although the deadline has been extended to eight weeks, the word may be not yet distributed.”
He also added that massive social media negativity for both movies, by media and trolls, ruined the screenplay.
