The new Barbie trailer seems very nice for viewers but for some it seems like something is missing. It had previously been revealed that Aqua’s hit “Barbie Girl” would not be included in the film, and as such, no tune from it was heard in the trailer. This has led some on social media to view the song’s omission as a missed opportunity, and curiosity about what it could be has now been satisfied thanks to HYTT Films on YouTube. The channel has an edited version of the Barbie trailer that features “Barbie Girl,” and it seems to fit pretty well. You can watch it below.
“The version we deserve,” reads a top comment on the trailer, liked hundreds of times by others.
Another commenter stated, “Making a trailer for the Barbie film without Aqua’s number is a serious mistake by Warner Bros. marketing.”
“This works really well,” says another. “I wish this was the official trailer because combining that song with the visuals generally gives me a really positive, upbeat vibe and I’m in for a good time.”
Why isn’t the “Barbie Girl” song in the Barbie movie?
Last year, Aqua singer Lene Nystrøm confirmed reports that the song “Barbie Girl” would not be used in Barbie. While the band couldn’t say for sure why they weren’t contacted about getting the song for the movie, it’s most likely due to the legal issues that have been caused between Aqua and Mattel. When the song was released in 1997, Mattel sued MCA Records for trademark infringement, prompting the record company to file a libel counterclaim. Both claims were thrown with parody law protecting the song, but there may still be some bad feelings towards Aqua at Mattel after that fiasco.
Anyway, Nystrøm suggested Variety that adding the number might be a bit too exaggerated, making Barbie feel like “cheese on cheese,” though it’s worth noting that these comments came long before the new trailer showed just how wild the movie already is without “Barbie Girl.” Still, Nystrøm suspected that the movie would bring some renewed attention to the Aqua song after all, and as we see it happening, it turns out she was right.
“I totally understand why they didn’t use it, but it’s going to get us a lot of attention either way,” she said.
Barbie will be released in cinemas on July 21, 2023. You can the Real trailer of the movie below.
