Kathryn Hahn, who stars as Claire in the adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s advice book “Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice from Dear Sugar,” chose the “Ghost Ship” letter as the column that resonated most with her.

Claire, a fictionalized version of Strayed, provides wisdom and advice that she herself reflects in the chaos of her own life. Hahn enters the complex headspace of a character who lost her mother at age 21. Younger versions of Claire (portrayed by Sarah Pidgeon and Marlo Barclay) periodically resurface in emotional flashbacks.
“When we meet him his life is boiling in this [point], All the mechanisms she had to deal with her grief are now starting to fall apart. The grief Claire holds for her mother plays a role in how she interacts with her daughter’s parents as well as her husband.

While Hahn agrees with all of Dear Sugar’s (Strayed) advice, that doesn’t mean it isn’t hard for her to take it sometimes.
Han said, “What I found I had difficulty with, or really hard to hear, is listening to that little voice inside of you that says ‘go’.” “I’m not really applying it in my life, but it’s always been a really hard thing to apply and just in terms of listening to your gut.”
